《Carrie & Lowell》，以Sufjan的母親Carrie及繼父Lowell為名。2012母親Carrie因胃癌過世，繼而使Sufjan寫出了這張哀悼母親的專輯。

Carrie在Sufjan一歲的時候就與丈夫離婚，直到Sufjan五歲的時候才與Carrie和她再婚的丈夫Lowell接觸，一家人經歷了短暫卻難忘的時光。

對Sufjan來說，繼父Lowell帶來的影響比親生父親來得更深遠，即便繼父跟母親的婚姻後來並沒有維持，但Lowell從小就在Sufjan的音樂才能上給予了許多幫助與鼓勵，現在也依然在協助Sufjan的獨立廠牌。

Carrie長年飽受躁鬱、憂鬱症、精神分裂與酒精及藥物成癮的痛苦，她對於Sufjan來說是若即若離，既親近卻又如此陌生的關係。從歌中屢屢可以感受到Sufjan對母親渴望親近、渴望彌補兩人之間的空洞的遺憾，雖然對母親抱有不理解與傷痛，但又同時深深愛著母親的矛盾複雜情緒。

整張專輯充斥了Sufjan對母親之死的打擊與哀慟，飄揚空靈的歌聲下講述了許多兒時回憶及複雜的私人情感，因此這張專輯甚至被稱為是Sufjan的自傳。

詩意的歌詞時不時就會穿插Sufjan童年在奧勒岡的場景、與上主的對話，從中體現基督信仰是對Sufjan影響深遠的重要元素之一，還有希臘神話元素也經常伴隨其中。
